Another script just published is Mr Beresford, which was produced by the Show of Strength company in Bristol last year.

One Foot in the Gravy
Synopsis
The pantomime includes all the traditional elements: hissing and booing, plenty of conversation with the audience, easy singalong songs to familiar tunes, comic cooking routines, sweet giveaways, and happy ever after. Scope is given for topical insertions and mention of local football teams etc. The modern touch has been achieved by the introduction of Bonnie, the Internet Genie and a GI-type chanting march performed by the goblins. The author has taken familiar aspects of several different children's tales to weave her plot - Snow White, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Simple Simon, Aladdin.
One foot in the gravy is the story of a turkey destined for the Christmas table, who manages, by fair means or 'fowl', to beat the system.
The Local is, predictably, a fairly light-hearted look at life and the regulars in a village pub. Pub entertainments (such as a quiz, and the local 'lads' performing a 'Full Monty') provide not only parts for extras but a licence for a bit of OTT lunacy. The play's one set (the bar) should endear it to amateur groups. The prologue is a funeral, at which the audience, briefly, becomes the congregation. But whose funeral? A neat little twist at the end of the play, and all is revealed.
UNCLE SID
a new one-act play
Cast 1m, 1 f, 2 children (1m, 1f) One set. The play is set in the mid 1950s.
Auntie Glad has died suddenly, and Uncle Sid is totally at sea, without a clue how to look after himself. His only relative is his nephew, Jack, Jack's wife Kay and their two children, Wendy and Philip. Uncle Sid is an unlovable, cantankerous old cuss, and the family are not keen to have him to live permanently with them. Clearly something needs to be done, so Uncle Sid is shipped off to a residential home. Problem solved. Well, one would think so . . .

A teacher of English and Drama for twenty years, founder-member of a much travelled theatre company for another thirty, director and actor (always in the round), I have written plays, for schools, youth and adult companies. They:
a) are mostly in verse, but rely a great deal of movement and energy in performance;
b) are written for the round, and are not suitable for any other kind of staging;
c) are for playing on simple, often bare acting areas;
d) require no special effects, or anything but ordinary room lighting.
e) cost almost nothing to put on.
They are ideal material for amateur and community groups interested in ecological presentation, and the more enlivening actor-audience relationship that the unencumbered round encourages. The plays are timeless but full of contemporary relevance.
My plays are listed and described on www.doollee.com; a catalogue is available from me. Extracts from some of the plays can be read on my website.
Selection of Available Plays
SHORT: (mostly 3-4 characters)
Sex Barrier – experimental – a simple story about infidelity – but all depends on which actor is playing which character.
Saxo – Pod wanted a girl. She got Saxo. Gradually he takes over the house and ends up giving birth to his own parents.
The Meek One – Jeph has been attacked and left for dead. Later he stumbles upon the den where his attacker and the girl he has abducted live. Jeph and the girl kill the brute and then, surprisingly.......
Robin Goodfellow Plays – five seasonal plays, from Summer (One) to Summer(Two) that follow the “green” adventures of Robin and Kate. Comic modern versions of mummers plays – each involving a fight, death and resurrection.
Transformation Plays
Blooming Connie – Connie gets her own back on a brash young local councillor, her would-be seducer;
Salt and Barley – rural tale, using theme of Penelope, the abandoned wife of Ulysses, and the absurdly idealistic behaviour of Gilbert Golightly, a crusading townie.
Baskett’s Chickens – a darker village story featuring Kate – whose job is chopping off chickens’ necks in a food-processing factory.
Gert – with Armour – a crusading woman who finds her home situation difficult to handle
The Dome and the Trees – a short word and movement play involving the destruction of a wood.
FULL-LENGTH (16-30 characters)
Strugnell’s World (sequence)
The Monster – A kind of modern folk-tale the sequence is based on. Quest and Flute come to a mountain dominated by a Monster. They work their way through communities living on the Mountain – Poor, Rich, The Mob, Nomads, Guardians – before they reach the summit. But who or what is the Monster?
Other plays in the sequence: The City, And the Grot, The Wilderness, Flute Below.
The Woman – an enigmatic figure that gets entangled in the hostilities between two tribes. She has powers – but powers for what? Politics and imagination don’t go well together.
Dreamer (all female cast) – a girl goes in search of her real mother; gets into a seedy environment – but not before she enters a strange dreamworld does her search resolve itself.
Zodiac Plays 1 – Aries – Taylor Wakes Up. Another girl in search of herself. Set along the South coast, she meets a kaleidoscope of characters at different levels of reality and ends up far from home.
(A copy of any of these plays can be obtained for free by e-mailing me.)
Royalties by modest agreement.
I also have many textual extracts from my plays and dramatic poems, that can be used for courses and classes given to exploring the exciting territory of language and movement. And I am available for workshops or courses in any of these matters

"Lovers"
"Lovers" is an exciting new musical available at present to amateurs royalty free. It examines various aspects of love through the eyes of "lovers" who frequent a chic cafe in New York city - including a scatterbrained, naive young woman; a selfish, immature young artist; a sensitive young gay man; a middle-aged gay man finally finding the courage to "come out"; a philandering husband with a wife who gives a new dimension the the phrase "love is blind"; and an attractive and articulate but emotionally scarred battered wife, desperately searching for a chance to change her life but lacking the self-confidence to try. A pregnancy, an extra-marital affair and a tragic death cause these people to re-examine their lives and some of them emerge with a new found strength that changes their lives forever.
The emotionally powerful and crisp-witted book & lyrics are penned by Robert Gould, a playwright from south Wales, whose new play, "Inside Out" (co-written with Swedish writer, Jimmy Granstrom) will receive its world premiere in Melbourne in January 2003. The music is composed by Ty Kroll, a brilliant young talent from Wisconsin, USA, whose previous work includes musical adaptations of "The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow" and "Brave New World". The score ranges from powerful, dramatic arias through bouncy pop tunes to evocative ballads where the melodies simply soar. This is a challenging new work which amateur groups should grab with both hands.
Please email me for more details.

Raymond Hopkins
Playwright Raymond Hopkins from Witney has taken the unusual step of donating all the royalties from his play "Love Begins at Fifty" to Multiple Sclerosis Research. This original farce, which has 3 male parts and 6 female parts, broke all box office records during its summer season at Torquay.
Amateur Stage reviewed the play in their January 1999 edition and described it as "frenetically funny" and "a fast and furious farce which provides hilarious opportunities.
The play centres on Anita and Clive Debanks who have been married for 28 years and have led an uneventful life. But all that is about to change. Although in a loveless marriage, Clive has never been unfaithful. However, as preparations for his 50th birthday party are underway, Clive feels that life is passing him by and has a yearning for a final fling.
To this end he chooses three prospective partners from the "Lonely Hearts" column in the local paper. By a strange twist of fate, the same paper is offering a Caribbean cruise, as the first prize, in a competition to find the perfect married couple.
Anita enters the competition, but keeps it secret from Clive. A photographer arrives to take the pictures of the happy couple the night that Anita is away, but Clive is busy entertaining one of his new dates. From that point onwards, things get a little complicated, to say the least.

This play runs for 1hr 45 mins, and can be performed as either a straight play or a play with music. As professionally recorded backing tracks are supplied no musicians are necessary!! Dan
Hated and despised by the ones he loves, held responsible for the death of his brother Dan, Mike Shaw sets out to change himself, his life and his friends. He tries to help a casual acquaintance, a man he has previously mocked as a fool, who has just won a fortune on the lottery. He attempts to keep away the "friends" who would part the fool from his money, but others misinterpret his motives. The subject is topical and the characters finely drawn - a play of our times.

Like so many playwrights before me I started at the grass roots by obtaining LAMDA awards at drama school and gaining much experience through amateur theatre before finally entering the professional stage. Along the way I have acted, directed, produced and been involved in all aspects of backstage activities spanning over twenty five years. More recently I have turned my attention to writing winning the NDFA 'George Taylor Memorial Cup' for 'Calvin' which was voted best original one-play of 1998 (since been re-titled 'Babysitting Calvin' by the publishers). Several of my full length plays are currently on tour and I have found equal success with radio and television scripts. Below are a small variety of my one-act plays now available for production. Julio Caesar, the soon to be Roman Emperor, must marry an Angle princess if he is to inherit the throne of the Caesars, a condition laid down by his late father. Hence, a raiding party heads for Britannicus to kidnap the beautiful Voluptua, aided by a roman spy, Devious Devious (Double D). The kidnap is successfully carried out by Caesar's henchman, Glutious Maximus (a.k.a. Big Bum) but Big Bum also has designs on the Roman throne.
Despite the success of the kidnap, Princess Voluptua's fiancé, Mykindomforanhorse, sets off in pursuit of the kidnappers, aided by his father, Optimistix and his (soon to be) father in law Rule Britanicus. Mayhem follows in Rome, leading to a happy ending.
It is an original script, written in the style of a traditional pantomime. We had great fun performing it ourselves and hope that others will do too.

A Fine Time For Wine
Book & Lyrics: Jonathan Posner
Music: Tony Osborne
A stirring tale of bitter rivalry, tender romance – and damn fine wines!
Who should London Society have turned to for advice on wines in the 1920’s?
Was it suave Henry St.Aubyn?
Or feisty socialite Stephanie Mulholland?
This was one rivalry that had to be settled – in the wine-tasting wager to end them all.
It should have been very straightforward; the best cheat wins.
That was until romance got in the way – leading to some very unexpected results.
A Fine Time For Wine is a sure-fire crowd-pleaser:
Press reaction to the performance by the Riverside Players, Old Windsor:
“…this musical was nothing less than total theatrical magic. A delight from beginning to end.”
Roy McKay, Windsor Observer
“To win an audible gasp of pleasure from an early 21st century audience when love conquers all is quite an achievement.”
Francis Batt, Windsor Express

Spirit of History
Book & Lyrics: Jonathan Posner
Music: Chris Smellie & John Gauntley
A time-travelling romantic musical adventure with witchcraft, swordfights, comedy – and a great wide-ranging score. From big chorus numbers to power ballads and comedy interludes, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
England, 1537.
All Sebastian de Beauvais wanted to do was to drink, hunt, fight and make love.
He didn't reckon on meeting Abby Parker.
Abby was different.
Abby came from the 1990's.
She knew what would happen to him. She knew when. But if she told him, the consequences could be terrifying.
And that was just the start of it.
Reaction to the performance by the Riverside Players, Old Windsor:
"This thought provoking musical had a strong story, excellent songs, both rousing chorus numbers and heart felt ballads; a stimulating new musical." Centre Stage, Windsor

The Beast Of Ghastly Manor
This is the Play Version of what's going to be a Musical Farce. Take a "Cross Dressing" Butler, your typical run of the mill "Mad Scientist" and his side kick "Egor", add a Party of young people, a 10 foot chicken and I think you'll agree, it does sound like Fried Chicken tonight and Scrambled Eggs in the morning at least!
Dr Ghastly's daughter, Tina, is throwing a party at the manor for her chums but unfortunately for them, tonight is the night the Doctor lets loose his creation. His butler Wilson and Egor (who strangely turned up when the Doctor's wife left him for an other man a week ago) are in partnership to try and steal the Doctor's secrets but things just won't go to plan. Tina's guests arrive and then the cat and mouse play starts.
After 2 of the guests go missing during the thunderstorm, the police are called. All eyes turn to the Doctor, his drinking problem and his ethics. So is the Doctor to blame for his "Gin Ethically Modified Genius" or is there a darker plot beneath it all? Well just to confuse matters more, the Doctor's wife turns up, but just as the plot makes sense at last the "Beast Of Ghastly Manor" attacks and there's egg on
everyone's faces.

Chris Scott Scripts
A variety of one act and full length plays available for use without charge by AMATEUR groups.
Many of these plays have been entered for the Kent One Act Festival. Please note that some of these scripts deal with controversial themes and make use of explicit language but those which fall into these categories are clearly indicated on my website.
A little about my background:
After a brief spell as a professional actor, I wrote my first play in 1970 and have worked on many projects since both alone and in collaboration. Whilst still actively engaged in playwriting, my time recently has been mostly spent in the writing of my first novel which was published last year.
I hope you enjoy these scripts and if you feel your group would like to use any of them feel free to contact me - although there is no charge, I would still obviously like to know when and where any performance is taking place.
You can find more details and full copies of the scripts on the website, which is in the process of construction, and as the plays are typed up I will add them as quickly as possible.

Do you need an original play for your amateur company? I can provide it. Here are the details of my latest two pieces;
- "Carmilla", an adaptation of the Sheridan le Fanu story about a female vampire - with a lesbian sub-text - which was performed in Sheffield in 1999. It works!
- "Ipse", a slick black comedy about the life, works and violent death of Christopher Marlowe. It's pacy and dramatic - and did I mention, violent?

Lou Stone
"The True Story of Macbeth's Encounter With the Three Witches" or as published "A THANE IN THE ARSE" By Lou Stone.
The plot tells the true story of the three witches and their close encounters of the three kind with Macbeth. Unlike the Shakespeare play to which this play owes so much, the action for the most part takes place in today's suburbia where the three share a flat in Gravesend.....where else? The play (within a play) tells how on the fateful night when all three had an appointment to meet our hero on the now famous Blasted Heath, the third witch was having her own personality crisis and close to breaking point was unable to attend. How the other two get around this problem (or lose their contract) and the mayhem caused is the basic element to the plot. That a ventriloquist dummy features highly might give the game away but the idea might inspire the reader/actor to continue to the end.
Published by "New Theatre Publications" it appears in their ten plus character list although it can be cut down to 6/7 players. It does give great opportunities for three excellent comedy actresses as well as nightmares, sorry, I mean challenges, for the props department!!
Available from the publishers on their website they run a scheme of free reading to any person or company interested in producing their plays. (However, my bank manager would prefer it if you bought it.)

Keith Trezise has written mostly comedies ranging from the fifty-minute-farce "Four Play" to the full-length "Dying To Be Heard", but his published drama "Duplex" won him first prize in the Little Theatre Guild's playwriting competition in 1997. More details can be found on his web site.
Just the Ticket!
Thinking of Christmas 2001? Would you like to stage the World Première of a new play with a Christmas theme from the award-winning authors of Late for the Dentist? This one can feature as many Santas as you like!
Just the Ticket is a farcical comedy set in an ailing girls' school. It features crooks looking for diamonds, policemen learning to be Santas, a prospective parent from hell and teachers pretending to be pupils.
The cast lists 14, but with doubling the play could be done with 8 or 9, and you only need two men. It's easy to stage - all the action takes place in the staff room - and there are not many props or effects to manage. We are open-minded with regard to any alterations you may wish to make to suit your company, and would be willing to waive royalties for the first few performances. (We'd like a few free tickets, though!)

Kelvin and the Tooth Fairy. A New Pantomime
A new story combining classic pantomime traditions with modern ideas. Inspiration for the script came from my son James who spends more time on his playstation than is proper for anyone who wants to keep in touch with the real world. Hence Kelvin is obsessed with playing computer games and tries to boost the fortunes of his families failing restaurant business by wishing for his hero Sara Soft (the pantomime version of Lara Croft) to come out of the computer game. He is helped by Mo Lar, the Chinese tooth-fairy who speaks in limericks and Patsy, the restaurants waitress, and the whole plot unfolds under the watchful eye of our traditional panto Dame, Jean Sweep, a larger than life cleaning lady. Along the way our hero's have to bargain with skeletons, fight with a tribe of angry Indians and journey to the bottom of the sea. The script lasts for approximately 2 hours, and contains 12 original songs written especially for the show, and varying in style from a rap (for Mo Lar), a calypso and a wonderful love duet for the leading characters.
Further scripts available:
Cinderella and the Magic Fiddle - running time approx 1 hour
Rockin' Red Riding Hood - running time approx 2 hours
Snow-White and the Seven Brothers - running time approx 2 hours
A reading script and video of the shows can be supplied. Please contact me.

The residents, (the audience) are waiting for a slide show of their trip, but unfortunately the slides have been ruined. Josie, against Vernon's wishes, decides they'll put on a re-enactment of their trip, during which a good deal more is revealed, particularly about the circumstances of Frank's death, than she might have liked.

John Wright
"Love and Logic" is the story of Michael Brix, a successful businessman, who decides that he wants to build a gigantic theatre complex and inaugurate it by premiering a musical he's created himself on all the twenty stages of the complex. Journalists in the city love this chance to ridicule what they regard as a megalomaniac on the loose. But one journalist, Mary, falls in love with Michael and the main plot is the relationship between them and how it suffers from Michael's inability to articulate his emotions. He extols the virtues of common sense and cautions against succumbing to whims and emotions. Mary, on the other hand, is naive and easy-going.
There is also a conflict between Michael and a tabloid journalist, Paul, who have a big showdown towards the end. Subplots abound, too, amid some screwball characters at the theatre complex.
There are around ten songs, some solo songs, three duets and a number requiring five voices.
The number of characters is around 15 but that depends on how many you want. Some of the smaller parts can be omitted without making major changes to the script and it is eminently possible to get by with no more than twelve characters. Furthermore, two parts could be performed by the same actor or actress, so you may be able to do it with an ensemble of less than twelve players.
I am prepared to be open-minded about the script in the sense that if I find an ensemble who are willing to perform it, I would be willing to let them make revisions in order to accommodate their unique situation. Email me for further information.
Peter Wright
Stand By Me
A musical based (loosely) on King Lear in much the same way as Return To The Forbidden Planet is based on The Tempest. Written during Shakespeare's northern period and set in Manchester clubland in the sixties (that is nineteen sixties). A cast of 7 men and 4 women not only wrap their tonsils round some fine Shakspearian dialogue but also sing some 27 songs from the sixties such as River Deep Mountain High, Midnight Hour, The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Any More and Waterloo with backing from an on stage band. This musical was written for Romiley Little Theatre who performed it in 1998 to packed houses. A review of the poduction appeared in the August 1998 edition of Amateur Stage which said, "Wright's adaptation paraphrases the original to striking effect with dialogue lifted from not only Lear but also Richard III, Twelfth Night, Macbeth, Romeo & Juliet, Henry V among several...... The whole show is very cleverly put together, the allusions to the several plays totally in context and the musical numbers impel the show along forming the greater part of it. Peter Wright can be well pleased with his ingenuity...... Visually & theatrically it was a stunning piece of Son et Lumiere. By the end of the show the audience, totally involved, were "rocking" as well. Quite a night.
