In 1997 Founder/Director Jay Coleman shared a dream of setting up a charity performance.
He invited few friends to meet and by the end of the evening the structure of the show was born. He set about gathering a few of the best performers in the area for the show and invited a local Musical Director to assist in bringing the dream to life.
A few months later on the eve of December 6th, the show took place at the Congress Theatre, Cwmbran, to a 'sell out' audience, with a response and reviews that none involved could have imagined to have been possible.
One of the tunes within the show was 'We Are What We Are' from 'La Cage Aux Folles' and told the story of equality and acceptance within life, but in a fun way.
Jay thought this would be a great way to take a group of people with immense talent beyond one night, echoing the story of the song within the aims of the group.
On that wonderful eve was born 'We Are What We Are Musical Theatre Company'. So called as we stand fast in our belief that we are all human beings and discrimination of any kind for any reason, does not have a place on our stage or in our company, which has a Zero Tolerance Policy.
The company has since gone from strength to strength, with the help of Miss Vicci Smith our MD alongside Jay at the helm and a superb core team.
We have had many fantastic performances over the past few years with outstanding reviews and full houses to our name.
We stand fast in our belief that we are all human beings and no matter what or who we are, 'We Are What We Are' and we exist to have fun!!
Company Achievements
We have had many successes also we have had many of our members succeed in the professional arena.
Our re-launch on 26th February 2005 was to adopt the name ‘WAWWA The Musical Theatre Company’ by which we are now known and to instil a fresh burst of energy. This we also achieve after every show, with new member intakes, whilst being lucky enough to keep all our cast members, other than those that move on to the professional arena, and we are proud to have been the stepping stone for many of these professional performers, who often acknowledge us in their programmes.
We are also very proud that we have all levels of performance within individuals and will work one to one with any one they, or we, feel have the need. We concentrate on improving confidences and social skills through the art and medium of live theatre, coupled with involving all levels of performers to create a professional standard and polished show, This is easy to say, but the standing ovations and many great reviews are testimony to this and the fact we now have a waiting list to join. Further testimony to our success is that we are constantly invited to entertain for local authorities all over the county and we also sing at countless private functions, besides which we find time for charity concerts.
Auditions are set in a group workshop environment and a private vocal audition is also required. We have re-branded the company and a fresh new approach is enabling all members and core team alike to keep a great, exciting and fresh interest and energy within its run. Please visit our new website and enjoy your visit, this is a very informative site. Please feel free to sign the guest book and let us know you have visited.
During our recent performances of Godspell unbeknown to anyone, representatives of Samuel French were in the audience and as a result their New York Office offered us the rights to ‘Side Show’ and since then Bill Russell the author has E-Mailed to say he will come over to watch the performance. This will be the Welsh Premiere.
There you have WAWWA The Musical Theatre Company, Cwmbran, Torfaen, S Wales.
