BOWTHORPE STAGERS – WE’RE NO FOOLS!

This October, Bowthorpe Stagers are gearing up to audition for their new pantomime, Aladdin. This will be the group’s third pantomime since establishment, and promises to be the most unusual yet…

But first – who are Bowthorpe Stagers?
They are a small amateur dramatics group based in the Bowthorpe area of Norwich (no surprises there), which was formed in July 2003. Members range in age, the youngest being 10 and the oldest being [undisclosed], and are from in and around the City of Norwich. The group was originally established with the aid of a lottery grant, aiming to bring theatre to the children of Bowthorpe; including them in the productions and putting on shows in the area, giving them a chance to experience all aspects of drama. Now, being entirely self-funded, they are keen to encourage people of all ages to partake in the productions in whatever way they can, and are always willing to involve new people in their current production.

In the last two years, Bowthorpe Stagers have performed two other pantomimes, Babes in the Wood (Jan 2004) and Dick Whittington (Dec 2004). Although the cast had mixed experience in performance, with some of the members stepping onto the stage for the first time, everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and the audience certainly seemed to as well. The group also has strong ties with the West Norwich Lions, and have previously performed a small Old Tyme Music Hall for the elderly residents of Bowthorpe, providing them with an afternoon of free entertainment. They enjoyed themselves so much that the group has been asked to prepare a second variety show later next year! Bowthorpe Stagers also plan to stage Terry Pratchett’s “Carpe Jugulum” in time for Halloween 2006.

Aladdin will be different compared to any other show the Stagers have performed for several reasons. Whereas other dramatic groups are preparing to perform their pantomime in the traditional Christmas season, the group has decided to emphasise the comic value of the pantomime genre and have decided to open their show on April 1st 2006 – April Fool’s Day. Also, for the first time since formation, the group is handing over direction of the next show to two A Level student members of the group, Lizzy London and Eleanor Jordan, who currently attend City of Norwich School. This unique opportunity is something the group is keen to encourage in the future.

Founder member Lizzy: “I am so grateful to be given the chance to work with all the people I’ve come to know at Stagers before I leave next year. The experience will be so helpful in preparation for my degree in Theatre and Performance and, hopefully, will be an enjoyable one for everybody concerned!”

The group will be holding auditions for the show in two weeks’ time. All parts are available for open audition, although the group will be primarily looking for anyone who is interested in playing the part of the Dame, Widow Twankey, and the principal boy and girl, Aladdin and Yasmin. The girls are also keen to form a strong dance chorus.
