Though it seems like only yesterday, we were planning our holidays, Christmas will soon be upon us again. On December the 22nd 1855, a certain Mr Charles Dickens came to Sheffield to read his classic ghost story ‘A Christmas Carol’, where he was then presented with a service of table cutlery by the Mayor as a token of gratitude. This year in November (the 8th – 12th), ''Southey Musical Theatre Company'' will be presenting their musical version of the same tale. 2005 is Southey MTC's 70th anniversary and following the success of their celebratory concert ‘Southey Sing’s 70’ - performed earlier this year, they are ready to get us into the Christmas spirit with this, wonderfully heart-warming show. Never performed by Southey before, this is yet another show to add to the long list already performed by them in the past 70 years. 'Scrooge – the musical' will be performed at the Montgomery Theatre, Surrey Street on November 8th–12th at 7.15pm with a Saturday matinee at 2.15pm. For tickets call 01246 415993 or email.

Southey Musical Theatre Company are also doing their bit for charity this year as they prepare a concert to be performed at the back end of September. All the money raised will go to rebuilding fund for Meersbrook United Reformed Church. The current building has been condemned, but plans to build a new church on the site of the original building are well under way, and as the project will cost in excess of £175,000 a massive fundraising effort is taking place. A spokesperson from Southey MTC said 'this is our chance to contribute to a very worthy cause by doing what we do best'.
