The Ermington Players were formed in 1991 by Ann Roffe, Jose Boon, Margaret Northey and Susan Heard on a whim after a successful venture at the local school.
For our first production ‘Wife Required’ local farmer Nick Toms was ‘persuaded’ to join after he had come along to write a piece about us for the local press, our membership blossomed from 5 for our first pantomime Robin hood to 35! From those humble beginnings in Ermington School hall we have progressed into one of the leading companies in the South Hams.
We have now moved to the W.I. Hall Yealmpton where we play to sell out audiences. Our membership had fluctuated over the years, but now has a steady cast of 25 aged from 11 to 65. Our performance numbers are only governed by space back stage, if we had a bigger venue we would be overflowing! We have tackled all sorts of plays, murder mysteries, comedy farce, revues and pantomime. We are now renowned for our off the cuff and wacky pantos which we write ourselves. Over the years we have put ‘Jack Down Under’, ‘Dick Goes West’, given Bond new assignments – ‘From Flusher with Love’, made ‘Five Go Vamping’ and ‘Louisiana Jones and the Idol of El Sombrero’ was our latest exciting adventure.
This year’s production for February 2006 will be another fantastic adventure; you never know what’s coming next even if you think you know the story! All written by the talented team of Ann Roffe, Richard Knightley, Jose Boon and Ken Ousey. In March 2006 we are taking the Panto to the Devonport Playhouse for our fist big adventure into a ‘proper’ large theatre. We hope that this will be come a regular event.
We are always looking for new members, especially for back/front of stage and in the costume department or if you are a local writer and have a comedy play for summer 2006, please give us a call on 01548 830348.
