THE LINDISFARNE PLAYERS

Lindisfarne Players were founded in 1969 and have been giving local performances ever since. The group specialise mainly in comedies and perform twice a year at a local venue. Focus Theatre, Short Street, Southend on Sea.

We have a small membership totalling 15 people, all of which have either trod the boards or assisted backstage. John Birmingham our current Chairman joined the group in the mid eighties.

Over recent years we have performed mainly comedies. Such as Richard Harris’ Outside Edge directed by Sandy Atkinson who returned to the group with her husband Steve last year for “Lucky Sods”. Steve designs and builds our sets and Sandy works diligently on costumes. This year the group decided to take an original play “You and me Both” written for us specially by Basildon based Paul Ebbs. We debuted this at the All England Theatre Festival at Eastwood Studio Theatre, Eastwood where GODA adjudicator Marie O’Sullivan awarded us with a “A” Grade, something the team are very proud of. We performed the play again in May along with Ayckbourn’s “Living Together” from “The Norman Conquests”. This autumn will see the group perform Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest”, the only difference being our Lady Bracknell is far from ladylike, being the group secretary Steve McCartney. He will say the famous line “A Handbag!” when he plays the role later this year. Sandy Atkinson is once again set to direct the cast with auditions taking place in early June.

Lindisfarne Players are currently searching for new members both to take part in their next production and to expand the group ready to tackle the dramatic challenges of 2004. If you live in the area and are interested in joining, then contact the secretary Steve on 01702-312783 or check our the web site.
