Why is an Avatar called an Avatar?

What IS an Avatar? I mean, I know it's a piccie but why is it called an Avatar? It's just that it's the first time I've ever come across that term...

My dictionary gives the following definition:

Chiefly Hinduism
a manifestation of a deity or released soul in bodily form on earth
2
Computing
a moveable icon representing a person in cyberspace or virtual reality graphics
Origin from Sanskrit avatara 'descent'.
Doesn't help much does it
