We are looking for something suitable for our musical theatre group - but not a musical!

We have:

5 or 6 boys aged between 8 & 11
6 or 7 girsl aged between 8 & 11
2 boys aged 13
2 boys aged 17
1 or 2 (could be 3 or 4 available) girls aged 14
adults 3 or 4 males (varying ages from late 20's to mid 70's)
adults 2 or 3 females (varying ages late 20's to late 50's)

Not everyone needs to be cast - but would be good if everyone could have a small part.

Would prefer something with minimal sets if possible due to the restrictions of the venue.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I was going to engage in my favourite knee-jerk reaction of "Honk!" until I realised that you didn't want a musical!

Stage adaptation of Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (sorry, only know the musical version)
How about a panto?

Much Ado About Nothing? We did a simplified version of this a few years back; we kept most of the script but trimmed the fat in some areas where, basically, Shakespeare was padding. We simplfied some of the language, while hopefully keeping the well-known bits intact, and set the piece as 1930s gangsters rather than some vaguely Italian situation. Didn't need many props, either, in fact it was performedon on a thrust stage installed in a medieval church. And no copyright fees.

For some reason The Crucible comes to mind, especially if your girls can do convincing hysterics. I have to say it's a long time since I saw that script, though.

There is a non musical version of this available. Also, Narnia, the Last Battle, which involves people of all the ages listed. PM me if you want to know more.

I came up with a few options. Follow this link but look carefully at the descriptions as some may be excluded on set or other criteria. (One, for example, is a collection of short scripts, which appears in the list because it can be done with your cast numbers, but they would be split into groups with a group performing each short play, which may not be what you want.)
The first on the list ("A Grimm Night for Hans Christian Andersen") is very popular and could accommodate a wide range of ages. (The first version of that is a "musical play" rather than a full-blown musical.)

Kathy,

Looking at our catalogue, it would seem that 'Sunshine Mountain' is an almost exact fit for your needs - a large cast of young and old, minimal sets and not a musical (although being a play with music, there are musical items played by a 30s style band - either live or recorded).

Sunshine Mountain (15m, 11f, 3m/f)
Set in the mid-1930's, a group of excitable children are taken to the seaside for a day. An endearing look back at more relaxed past times, when Sunday School charabanc outings were very popular and deckchair attendants ruled the beach! Suitable for either adult, youth or mixed age group productions. The principal characters use the interesting device of a ‘flash-forward’ speech in a tight spotlight, which tells us what happened in their lives after that day out, sometimes sad, sometimes amusing but always compelling. The audience are invited to share the feelings and aspirations of the individual characters. Further pathos and comment is provided by the 1930’s style band and singer who provide another layer to the overall effect of this amusing but poignant play.
