Dear Web Lord
Why when surfing the ring does each site open in a seperate window? To say it's more than a little annoying is a tad of an understatement. Why can't each site replace the previous one in the one window?

There are a couple of reasons. The first is that the code was originally set up to open the new site on top of the existing one but the web ring script generated incorrect code so it never worked properly that way. Particularly annoying when sites have url-stays or frames. However, I could have fixed the syntax to make it work properly.
The second is that I assumed that members of the web ring would hope that visitors to their site might stay on their site for a bit rather than jump off around the ring. Hence, in fixing the script syntax, I decided spawning a new window would be better as it was more likely to result in visitors going back to the other window when they've finished surfing the ring and having a browse around.
p.s. I don't understand the reference to Drooper ... are you insulting my intelligence again

It has its ups and downs but in a ways I do prefer the fact that they open in their own window!
Its better to try and keep traffic at your site as well as passing it around.
I can understand that it would become a little annoying but I do tend to think it is best that way!

Drooper was a character in a late 60s/early 70s (?) children's TV series called Banana Splitz. It was on around the same time as HR Puffnstuff and just after The Monkees.
Would I be showing my age if I said my younger brothers were devoted fans?

Zorro, you're not THAT young!
One banana, two banana, three banana, four
Four banana makes a bunch and so does many more
La la la La-la-la La, La la la La-la-la La
Four banana, three banana, two banana, one
One banana basking 'neath the hot banana sun
La la la La-la-la La, La la la La-la-la La

Drooper also read out the letters - hence Dear Drooper
Darn it - you try but sometimes it's just wasted

So what's the consensus? Do we like the new window opening which tries to keep visitors on our own sites, or prefer the next ring site to open on top?
I agree it's a little frustrating if you're browsing round lots of sites in the ring but I imagine most visitors probably visit one or two then return to the source site.
It's not an easy thing to change since the code is already posted on people's sites and they would all need to change it, but interested in your views.

Right - I was one of the first to moan about the amount of windows I had open.
But now I agree that we need to keep the site open in the background all the time and not lose people. Not everyone knows how to use a "back" button!
Keep it the way it is. That's my vote.

I vote for opening in a new window.

I also vote for opening in a new window.
I use frames on my sites, and opening in the same window would cause the next site in the ring to appear in a sub-window of my site. That tends to look awful and is even more frustrating than multiple windows.
