OK then, who's nicked the Avatar update facility. I just prepared a new one and go in to find I can only use the approved board (or should that be bored?) ones or none at all! mad.gif

I don't remember reading anything about this and am most miffed. sad.gif

*SULK*

Thoughts or explanation anyone?

Robin
Ryano
Your new one's good though Robin!!
Martin
Sooooooo glad it's not just me . I asked the question once (probably incorrectly phrased) and was told it was still there

At least George provides some great ones *creep*
rderriman
Thanks, but not quite what I intended.

Unfortnately I was on aut-pilot an hit the delete button. I then couldn't get back my original! DOH.

Robin
Maureen
Ah. I now understand why you have a puzzled dog and not your usual Robins...!
George
I think Jane is limiting the damage I did last week with Maureens hehehe
rderriman
Oh come on George. Surely not? It's not as though you hacked in and changed Maureens is it? Given the simple maths of the number of members vs the number of 'official' avatars you are going to get some duplication anyway.

I dooooooo hope this board is not getting too serious for it's own good!

Robin
Maureen
We might have known it was George's fault. And even if it wasn't, we're still going to blame him. Bring back Robin's Robins!
amdram - Jane
We were having problems with download times on some of the avatars and had to limit this facility. Send me the avatar you want to use and I will add it to the main section for you to use.

Jane
George
Ahhh that's a reason and a half Jane, I tink some people forget to "size down" their image and upload it...

TIPS....

RESIZE your image to 64 pixels by 64 pixels BEFORE uploading...

For JPG Files using option to shrink file size to about 20 to 30 percent.. (like the ones I upload).. Still looks good and quicker to load.

Or use GIF files...
rderriman
Plus I note some animated GIF around. They crank up the file size.

Jane, Doesn't the webboard software come with a file size limiting facility that you can set to prevent anyone uploading files of more than a certain size. If you are not sure, check with the vendor or their support site. Can't believe others haven't had the same problem?

If I send you GIF, anyone can use it! Even George! LOL!

I'll think about it!

Robin
Anne-Marie
Well, I'm just glad I still have my luverly pink avatar!!
Anne-Marie
Noticed that Martin's changed back from a bad tempered old henchman to a silly little duck? All together...ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!
Simon
I think the concern as Jane highlighted was that maybe the forum speed was affected by those people that had chosen to "remotely store" their avatar.

Thats those people who have their avatar on sites other than Amdram, I think there were some on Georges site.

The problem arose that the page took a long time to load because it was looking for the avatars and the place where they were was very slow.........
(no offence George, I think your host may have had an off day!)
rderriman
Simon and Jane.

I've just looked at the Invision Support board and surprise, surprise, there is a facility to allow users to upload avatars for personal use and limit the size. This is how you do it.
QUOTE
In the Admin CP, go to Board Settings -> User Profiles.
Next to Max. file size for avatar uploads? (K), set the maximum amount of space an avatar can take up.

Then, go to Users and Groups -> Manage User Groups -> Click edit next to the group(s) that you want to allow avatar uploading for, and next to Can Upload avatars?, click yes, and click Complete Edit at the bottom of the page.

Any chance? Pleeeeeeeease!

In case none of that works, read this thread that gives a minor script change. If you need to know how to chmod, there are other threads there that will lead you through it.

Robin
Simon
I think the intention was only to stop people from remotely hosting files, There was no intention to stop the upload facility that I am aware of.

I will discuss this with Jane and hope we can reach a resolution, in the meantime, I would ask the you bear with us!
rderriman
Thankyou Simon. You are so kind.

Can I also say that Jane is wonderful. Not that I'm creeping or anything! wink.gif

Robin

Okay, I've reduced the size and allowed the upload. We'll see how it affects the speed of the boards. If it slows it down again, then I will have to change it back.

Jane

PS Can upload avatars was never disabled.
HelenC
Oh Jane! What's happened to your own avatar???
rderriman
* Quiet whisper*

Darling Jane. wub.gif (Well it is almost Valentines Day!)

I still have a problem as its not an option in my control panel. I only get two options, the first to select from the drop down list. The second is to remove it completely. There used to be another one in the middle that allowed you to enter a URL or browse for alocal file for upload. It just disappeared! Other than that is there an ftp address I can upload too?

Be a real treasure will you and take a peek!

Thankyou soooooo much.

Hi Robin

I'm quite happy for you to send me an avatar or two and I'll upload it for you. Other than that, I'll have a look see.

Jane

Okay, I restored it back, but I will need to talk to Simon about limited the size of these remotely stored avatars which are causing the page loads to slow down. At the moment I've reset the size to 10k, but we will have to review the situation.
Maureen
Yay! It now works and I'm back to a goofy blonde again!
rderriman
** Big kiss **

Oh thankyou oh wonderful adorable Jane. wub.gif wub.gif wub.gif Be my Valentine?

Hope you like the new one everyone? biggrin.gif

Watch out now!
