Can anyone help? We are performing "Lend Me a Tenor" at the beginning of June and are looking for a couple of 1930s "flapper"style wigs. The only suitable ones that we can find on the internet are on American sites which puts the price up before we start. I would be grateful of any UK links where we can get these wigs or if anyone has some that we can borrow/hire.

Whereabouts are you?

I hire wigs a lot from a chap in Leicester for period plays. He very successfully reproduces Victorian and Edwardian styles and they are lovely quality wigs. About ?20 a week to hire. I don't have his details to hand but can easily find them if it's reasonably local for you.

It does really need to be local because, in order to get the best effect, the actor wearing the wig really needs to go and try the finished article on so that any tweaks necessary because of face shape etc. can be made.

Tim generally needs 3 weeks' notice as, I suspect, may any other wig hiring places that you may find.

Good luck!

Thanks for the response Maureen. Unforunately, we could not be much further from Leicester - we are situated at Lossiemouth, on the Moray Firth coast, about 40 miles east of Inverness. The hire options are rather limited in this far-flung corner of the Empire but we will keep looking!

Hi there,

I have quite limited experience of wig hire, but nevertheless, what we have hired has been satisfactory. We have found that most places send you a detailed measuring chart, and the wigs they send are a very reasonable fit. I know this isn't the same as trying on personally, but it does work if that option isn't viable. Yes, as Maureen says, they do need a fair amount of notice, however. I have always found that distance isn't a problem, only in that you do not get to see before you hire, but in the worst case, items can be returned and most hirers are very accomodating in this respect.

All the best with your production
Maureen
And, if you do end up hiring something by post, it might be worth lining up a good local hairdresser to tidy it up for you or tailor it to a particular actor's look.

Hi, I'm not sure exacly what you mean by 'Flapper' wigs. Is it like the short bob wigs as worn in Chicago.
I have on-line sales for wigs www.feeling-flirtatious.co.uk
I have the type mentioned above and longer ones that either flick out or turn under.
You can view any of these at the site mentioned above.
I hope there is something there to suit you and if not happy hunting!
Lou.

Thanks for your response. We've managed to get a local hairdresser to adapt some wigs that we already had but I've added your site to my favouites and we may well use it in the future
