Does anyone know of the existence of computer software providing virtual reality facility for theatre and stage design instead of the 'old box model'

There is a fair bit of kit out there. I use a program called WYSIWYG which 3D models everthing - although it really is a lighting program However with all the bells and whistles its the wrong side of ?3k
Programs like turbo Cad or Auto Cad lite can do do 3D cad for hundreds of pounds but you'll need to construct all your own 3d bits and pieces.
I love CAD for it's accuracy and speed - especially when changing ideas. But although I use CAD for everything I still make a model box to convey all my set ideas across to the rest of the team because sometimes it's asier to see and touch a model and have everyone play with ideas

And of course with a set model it's easier to show it to the whole cast/crew in one go and give them a good look at it.

Ahhh I'm "into that" and a lot of other things... *wink*
Check out my Ghastly Manor page.
http://www.amadrama.co.uk/ghastly/I've got examples of Paper set Design and a Computer one.
I also have Set Designs I did for BARNUM which I'll put up on my site soon also.
(These were to scale for Norton Farm Theatre Maidenehad).
Now with the computer one you can actually "move around"
and see everything from different angles...
The software I use though isn't available any more...
I'll check my Magazine CDs for older versions and se if any are "public".

Ok checked at home....
I use SuperScape 3D Webmaster software.
The basic one I got from a Mag CD, and after hunting round the Web I managed to get an other version.
I'll dig out the Mag CD if anyone wants it... Email me...
It's old software now. The company who owns it doesn't even support it anymore..
It's quick, simple and although doesn't ahve too many lighting options, at least gives you a good idea if the Set is going to work.
You can actually setup a link over the web and let people "move around" your design...

The WYSIWYG lighting one really is fab though. We've just got the free demo but I think we're gonna HAVE to get it to do the whole show. It's like organising a rock concert or something on the screen.

Oh and with WYSIWYG you can use 3D models of people (they're included) It'll be the only time you'll ever see the actor in the right place at the right time!!!!!

sorry not believing THAT one for a moment Anne-Marie...
Yes the only thing that lets my software (Superscape) down is the lighting.
But it has 3d Models of Actors, and you can colour them to make them look different..
Sadly you can't "build" models.

Where did you get the free demo?
And how much exactly is it???

George,
Got the Demo from a stand at Plasa - I'll copy it for you if you like (mail me an address to send it to. I've alos got a demo of Stardraw somewher but havent' tried that yet.
WYSIWYG is made up of a number components which bolt on top of each other. WYSIWYG design is the Cad package and is around ?1100 The perform software bolts on top (for a further ?2k) and allows you to connect you lighting desk to your computer (that you've designed your rig with) and programme your show off line before you even put a light up - see that it doesn't work and start again!!
For more info check out AC lighting or ETC

Sketch up is used by some professional designers. I've seen designs for a production at the Old Vic modeled using it. It's also easy to learn.
