The Arundel Players

Arundel Building picturesThe Priory Playhouse,
London Road, Arundel, Sussex

The Arundel Players obtained the lease on The Priory Playhouse in 1977. The building forms part of the walls of Arundel Castle and was originally the wing of a 13th century priory. It was very dilapidated and great efforts were made by the members at that time. Funds were raised and notable members of the theatrical profession contributed in the way of sponsorship of seats. Much practical work has been carried out including restoration of the ornate plaster work and panelling. The auditorium has been raked and comfortable upholstered seats installed. The stage area is raised and a proscenium erected. A reasonable dressing room has been formed back stage but there is very little wing space available to store off-stage items. A roomy operating box has been constructed for lighting and audio control at the rear of the auditorium with good sight of the stage.

If you are interested in the theatre, whether as a spectator or a performer, the Arundel Players have something to offer you. We present five plays a year, including a musical during the Arundel Festival, as a member you can take par in any of these. If you prefer to come and watch, you can bring your friends and enjoy the atmosphere of our intimate little theatre in armchair comfort. The upholstered seats are tiered to give a perfect view from every part of the house. The theatre is centrally heated, fully carpeted and there is a licensed bar for your interval drink or coffee.

If you want to join in don't be put off by thinking that you have to be able to act or direct. Relatively few of our members have these talents, but we always need a small army to support them. Whether it is making props or costumes, building a set, acting as bar steward, selling programmes or helping with repairs and maintenance, there is something for everyone to do. Acting members will appreciate being able to rehearse on our own stage, and having a well equipped dressing room and an interesting technical department. If you are a beginner we'll be pleased to help you and to give you the opportunity to gain confidence and experience.

You can join the Arundel Players whether or not you are resident in the town. The annual subscription is £6.50, due on September 1st each year. Junior members, between the ages of 12 and 18, pay only £1.00.
